Lost-wax casting: ancient idea, modern foundry

The idea is thousands of years old: surround a wax form, remove the wax, and fill the cavity with metal.

Lost-wax casting—cire perdue—has roots in the fifth millennium BCE. Early solid castings used a wax model enclosed in clay. Hollow-core methods later made larger work possible by modeling wax around clay, reducing metal and improving the chance of filling before the alloy froze.

Then and now

Ancient makers built wax forms, attached channels and vents, applied fine clay for detail, strengthened it with coarser layers, fired out the wax, poured metal, broke the mold, and finished the casting. Greek workshops developed sophisticated direct and indirect hollow casting. West African, South Asian, Chinese, and pre-Columbian traditions developed remarkable knowledge of their own.

A modern art foundry follows the same logic with reusable silicone molds, wax positives, engineered sprues, ceramic shell or investment, controlled burnout, measured alloys, welding, and chasing. Technology improves repeatability; it does not remove risk or judgment.

Why it remains difficult

Every stage can carry a defect forward: trapped air, poor gates, cracked shell, incomplete burnout, turbulence, shrinkage, porosity, misruns, inclusions, distortion, or visible welds. Large sculpture multiplies handling, engineering, and installation demands.

The process survives because it translates delicate modeling into durable metal with extraordinary fidelity. It is not one act of pouring. It is a chain of skilled decisions.
